Just one widespread situation is discoloration or moss development. Discoloration is generally due to algae or mildew advancement, and just like moss, the issue is often solved with the addition of zinc flashing and strips better up the roof. As zinc progressively leaches out from the strips, it kills the organisms which have been masking the roof.
